Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum guaranteed there will be a thorough investigation on the killing of six civilians by soldiers in the state of Tamaulipas.
The incident took place on Tuesday, with soldiers claiming that they opened fire on a vehicle that sought to ram them while they were patrolling a highway. The army didn't clarify whether those in the car were armed.
Sheinbaum was asked about the killings on her daily press conference. She answered that "the use of firearms has to be rational" and "there is a law that establishes under what conditions." The soldiers were relieved of their duties.
Soldiers routinely engage with civilians, as the proliferation of cartels across the country means many operatives run into soldiers conducting law enforcement operations.
Also this week Mexican police arrested nine people in connection with the killing of three state police officers in Chihuahua.
Border report detailed that the people apprehended are eight men and a woman, with two of them directly taking part in the ambush of patrol cars in a mountain trail near the town of Moris.
Mexican Public Safety Director Gilberto Loya added that an arsenal of AK-47 rifles, pistols and ammo, as well as drugs, were seized in the operation.
"I want to speak firmly, to be clear in this message: There will be no quarter. We will be firm in the fight against criminals and in the search for those responsible for this act," Loya said.
"We will find the responsible parties; those who gave the orders and those who executed them," he added.
Seven other officials were injured during the attack. Five have been released and two remain under medical treatment.
