The Phoenix Suns got blown out in Game 7 of the Dallas Mavericks, depriving them of a potential return trip to the NBA Finals, 123-90. However, it appears the drama that unfolded in the third quarter of that game could be telling, particularly on the future of Deandre Ayton.

Ayton and head coach Monty Williams got into a verbal exchange that could dictate what will happen to the 23-year-old center for the Suns. If the heated exchange is any indication, Phoenix could be losing Ayton this summer.

Though it could not be verified what transpired, it appears the heated exchange as a result of Ayton not being fielded for the remainder of that game.

The top pick of the 2018 NBA Draft appeared to have muttered some words toward Williams’ way and the head coach was not pleased by it.

Rapper Lil Wayne claims that he heard what was said. Sports commentator Skip Bayless picked up on it and alleged the following on The Undisputed.

“This, from what I was told, got really ugly,” Bayless stated. “From what our man Lil Wayne told me…I think he either heard it or could lip-read. Monty got so upset with Ayton that he said, ‘You fricking quit on us.’ And that led to an exchange where each Monty and Ayton had to be restrained from going at each other.”

If this is the case, seeing Ayton back in a Phoenix Suns uniform does not look promising. He is set to become a restricted free agent and the verbal spat with Williams points to a potential exit.

Ayton was not offered a supermax contract, something that would have given him $172.5 million for five years.

There are several teams reportedly interested in the 6-foot-11 cager, potentially a place where he will be valued.

But being a restricted free agent, the Suns could still retain Ayton if they match any deal. But if Williams is still around, it will be interesting if this beef can be resolved in time before a new deal comes Ayton’s way.
