A one-year-old child has been reported dead after his grandmother reportedly accidentally ran him over with her car in Queensland, Australia on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The unnamed victim, a one-year-old toddler, reportedly ran down the driveway of his family's home in Charles Street, Heatley, Townsville at about 5:40 p.m on Tuesday, Aug 2, and was struck by a Toyota Prado 4WD that his grandmother was driving. Even though the child was immediately rushed to Townsville University Hospital for treatment, he died from his injuries on Tuesday night, the Daily Mail reported.

The unattended child reportedly ran out of the home following his grandmother as the woman was leaving. However, the grandmother was not aware that her grandson was outside and that he was near her car.

As the grandmother drove out onto the road, she accidentally struck him with the Toyota Prado that she was driving. After being flagged down by a passing motorist, the grandmother quickly exited her vehicle, scooped up the boy, and ran back inside her home. She then raced him back to the car and rushed the boy to the hospital for immediate treatment.

“We would never have expected this to happen," one neighbor said, adding that her husband saw the child "lying there" on the road.

According to the neighbors, it appeared as though the toddler lived with his extended family, with several other young children reportedly living in the home, Yahoo News reported.

Meanwhile, District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Brett Smith revealed that the medical staff did everything they possibly could to save the boy. The officers have established a crime scene and are investigating the incident.

In a similar but unrelated incident, an 18-month-old boy was reportedly killed after his father ran over him while reversing his pick-up truck in the driveway of a home in Barrington, Illinois on April 20, 2021, Latin Times reported.

The infant was reportedly outside their home with his mother and siblings when the tragic incident happened. When the father reversed his pick-up truck, the boy ran toward it and was run over by the car's front tire.

The parents did not see the child approaching the moving vehicle. The child, identified as Sebastian Kusnir, was rushed to the Good Shepherd Hospital by his parents but was later pronounced dead.
