Mexican-American Veteran Oscar Vasquez has been named as one of the honor guests to attend President Barack Obama‘s final State of the Union address tonight. The immigrant who came undocumented to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 12, went through a year-long of self-deportation and voluntarily returned to Mexico in order to enter the country legally and enlist in the military.

“It’s just a complete surprise,” Vazquez told NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth, “There’s a lot of other people out in this country who are doing amazing things. Just to be one of those who get invited … I’m speechless.” Vazquez's personal journey represents the story of a former Dreamer who now contributes to the economy as an engineer, “I stuck with STEM, I eventually ended up competing against a bunch of universities in an underwater robotics competition and winning the competition opening up all those doors for me."

The Latino has advocated on behalf of undocumented youth, earned a degree in engineering from Arizona State and served in the U.S. military. Watch the video of his personal immigration story and scroll down to see how guests receive phone calls inviting them to sit in the First Lady's box.

Just two days until President Obama's final State of the Union address. We've invited people from around the country who represent the progress we've made over the past seven years to come watch it from the guest box. They're pretty fired up → http://go.wh.gov/SOTUGuests
