A woman in India set her pregnant daughter-in-law on fire because she was upset with the victim over a love marriage with her son.

The four months pregnant victim, identified as Keerthana reportedly lost her twins while being treated for her burn injuries.

According to the reports, the gory incident is said to have taken place on July 17 in the Kamareddy district of Telangana.

The accused women, identified as Ambavva Kurati and her son, Pandari were arrested following the incident.

Police said Kurati and Keerthana were at odds and often quarreled with each other.

After one such heated altercation on the night of July 16, the accused mother-in-law doused the victim in petrol and set her alight.

Family members and neighbors who heard the pregnant woman’s screams rushed to the home and put out the fire.

The victim was taken to a hospital in Nizamsagar, where she lost her twins during treatment.

“Keerthana suffered 50 percent burns. As her condition is critical, family members took her to Hyderabad for better treatment on July 20. She remains critical,” Nizamsagar sub-inspector N Raju was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express.

No updates were available on the victim’s current condition.

The accused mother-in-law and her son have been booked under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code for an attempt to murder. If the victim succumbs to her injuries the accused mother-son duo may face murder charges, police said.

While the woman was arrested, her son is yet to be imprisoned. The Nizamsagar police are currently investigating the case.

A similar tragedy was reported in India's Maharashtra, where a man doused his pregnant wife with kerosene before proceeding to set her ablaze after a heated argument over his new marriage.

The couple has reportedly frequently engaged in heated arguments and fights over the past couple of months after the husband, identified as Anil Bahadur Chourasia, 35, allegedly married another woman in secret.

On Saturday, Oct 30, 2021, as the couple was embroiled in another confrontation regarding the man's new marriage, the accused, in a fit of rage, allegedly poured kerosene on his wife's body and set her on fire.

The victim, who was six months pregnant, sustained severe burns throughout her body in the attack and lost her baby.

The accused has been arrested and charged under section 307 (attempted murder) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
