Prince William is the second in line to the throne, and as he gets closer to becoming the king, his royal title will change. In effect, his children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — will also change their royal titles a few times, according to their father’s status in the royal family.

The Duke of Cambridge’s royal title since he was born up to the year 2011 was His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales. He was given the dukedom title after marrying Kate Middleton in 2011, and he is now called His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge. His title will change again once Prince Charles is declared as king when Queen Elizabeth passes away or steps down from her throne.

Once this happens, Prince William will be called the Prince of Wales since he is the first in line to the throne when his father becomes King Charles. His children will also adopt a new royal title, and they will be called Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Louis of Wales.

Aside from being called the Prince of Wales, Prince William will also inherit Prince Charles’ present royal title. He will become the Duke of Cornwall when in England and the Duke of Rothesay when in Scotland.

His wife, Kate, will be given the same title while maintaining the duchess name, which means that she will be the Duchess of Cornwall. Their children will also become Prince George of Cornwall, Princess Charlotte of Cornwall and Prince Louis of Cornwall.

In case Prince George gets married before Prince William is declared as king, he will be granted a dukedom. If he is still single when his father ascends the throne, he will be called His Royal Highness Prince George.

Princess Charlotte is a bit different since she is a daughter. Her royal title will not change as much as Prince George. But since she is Prince William’s eldest daughter, she is entitled to be given the Princess Royal title. However, to gain this royal style, her dad must become the king first.

The current holder of the title is Anne, Princess Royal, and she is Princess Charlotte’s great-aunt. She will be the holder until her demise, so Prince William’s daughter will have to wait. Until the title becomes available again, she will be called Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte when her father reigns as king.

Prince Louis is called His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge, and the last part of this title will be changed to “Cornwall” when his grandpa becomes king and his parents become the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. When his dad takes over and starts serving as the king of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, he will not have a special title because he is the second son. He will be simply be called the Royal Highness Prince Louis and will earn dukedom once he gets married.
