Given their status and wealth, Prince William and Kate Middleton can have their pick at any of the world’s most glamorous vacation spots. But the royal couple has one favorite haunt above all — one where they’ve been returning to numerous times even before they were married that it even promoted a few displeased remarks from Queen Elizabeth II in the past.

Prince George celebrated his sixth birthday on July 22 at the exotic Caribbean Island of Mustique. The Cambridges stayed on the exclusive island for a two-week sun-soaked summer holiday renting a luxury villa that reportedly costs £27,000 a week.

It won’t be the first time for Prince William and Kate’s family to visit the island. Just last year, they also chose Mustique to celebrate Prince George’s fifth birthday.

In fact, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge love Mustique so much that the island is one of their favorite haunts even before they got married. However, their jet-set lifestyle and holidaying in the exclusive and expensive island did not escape the Queen, who criticized Kate for it in the past, according to author Katie Nicholl.

“If she was not with William at Balmoral then the couple were skiing or holidaying on Mustique,” the author wrote about Kate in her book “William And Harry,” which was published in 2010. Nicholl was referring to events that happened back in 2008 before Kate and William were married.

Due to Kate frequenting the island, she even earned a moniker for it. “Kate was there so often the press dubbed her ‘Queen of Mustique,’ a title that had previously belonged to Princess Margaret,” the writer added.

However, Queen Elizabeth II was not very pleased when Kate’s activities were made known to her. “Britain was now in a recession and such frivolous displays of wealth were unpalatable to the Queen,” Nicholl wrote.

“It is Her Majesty’s opinion that if Kate is one day going to be William’s consort, then she needs a proper job,” Nicholl cited an unnamed source who knew of the matter. “Swanning from one five-star holiday resort to another is not the prerequisite for a young woman possibly destined to be Queen.”

Queen Elizabeth II voiced her opinion out of concern about Kate’s future since she’s bound to become a queen consort herself. “Privately she had grave concerns and believed that Kate needed to have a job and identity in her own right before an engagement was announced. The Queen is interested in Kate,” the source explained.

Obviously, the issue is long dead and gone. Unlike in the days before she married Prince William, Kate is a working royal now, and visiting Mustique once a year is a well-deserved respite from her hectic schedule back in London.
