The U.S. Secret Service has opened an investigation into California Governor Gavin Newsom after his press office posted a message on X saying Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would "have a bad day."
"Kristi Noem is going to have a bad day today. You're welcome, America," the governor's press office wrote on Saturday. Newsom's press office then re-shared its post about Noem and attached a press release announcing the governor's plan to sign legislation that will "protect immigrant communities" and "hold Trump accountable," suggesting that's what the original post was referencing.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli was the first Trump official to label the comments as "threatening", calling on the Secret Service to conduct a full assessment:
We have zero tolerance for direct or implicit threats against government officials. I've referred this matter to @SecretService and requested a full threat assessment. https://t.co/mKEN3CZjxn

The Secret Service then confirmed it had received the referral through an X post of its own, stating:
"Our field office is in receipt of the Department of Justice's communication. To preserve operational integrity, we are not able to comment on specific protective intelligence matters. However, the U S. Secret Service must vigorously investigate any situation or individual, regardless of position or status, that could pose or be perceived as posing a threat to any of our protectees. Especially in a politically charged climate, such as this"

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin also criticized the remarks as "ugly" and echoed the sentiment that Newsom's words read like a threat:
This reads like a threat.

This is ugly, @GavinNewsom.
Your keyboard warrior team may hide behind their laptops and spew this kind of vitriol but you would never have the guts to say this to her face. https://t.co/U4IOGj76Cj
Asked about the remarks, Newsom Told Politico that Noem would have a "bad day" because the new law "runs in complete contrast to what [she's] asserting and what she's pushing." The measures signed on Saturday included a ban on most law enforcement officials, including federal immigration agents, from wearing face coverings during official operations, with some exceptions.
"Immigrants have rights, and we have the right to stand up and push back," Newsom said at a press conference, describing recent raids as resembling "a dystopian sci-fi movie."
