Sidney's New Year's Eve fireworks show is the main attraction in this beautiful city at this time of the year. Millions of people around the world turn up to watch the most spectacular firework show over Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and in front of the Sydney Opera House.

For this occasion, authorities promise the show will be better than ever. Inhabitants and visitors will see more than seven tons of pyrotechnics lit at midnight.

According to IBT UK, “Fireworks will be lit from seven barges and from the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge during the 12-minute display.”

The event will be live streamed on this page, ABC iView and the ABC TV Facebook page from 8.35pm AEDT. Highlights include the Acknowledgement of Country, 9pm family fireworks and midnight fireworks. You can also stream the midnight fireworks from the Australia.com and Sydney.com Facebook pages. Australian singer Ella Hooper and actor Jeremy Fernandez will be in charge of the famous countdown to the New Year.

For Sydney, this is not a simple celebration but a huge responsibility they take very seriously. Thanks to this special celebration the country receives millions of tourist annually and they can’t really play with this.

8:38 pm

Welcome to Country

The theme for this year’s ceremony is Walking on Country. The welcome reflects Australia's respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their heritage and living culture. Eucalyptus smoke is released over the water, cleansing Sydney Harbour of any bad spirits. Flares are released and spectacular images on the pylons celebrate Eora country.

9:00 pm

Family fireworks display

The first fireworks allow our littlest spectators, who may nod off a little earlier, the chance to see a fantastic display. The 8-minute display includes fireworks released from 4 barges and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The display is choreographed to the soundtrack for children on 2Day FM.

9:15 pm

Harbour of Light Parade

Sydney Harbour is illuminated with ships gliding across the water, enchanting spectators of all ages. Each vessel is decorated with cool white ropelight, dazzling the crowds and adding to the unique choreography as they dance in the harbour.
