A 10-month-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries after being allegedly raped by the domestic helper of her family in India.
The accused, identified as 18-year-old Sunny Kumar committed the barbaric crime on Sunday, Nov. 14, at the infant’s home while her mother worked in the kitchen.
The mother heard her baby girl’s cries and rushed to their bedroom to find the accused domestic help in an objectionable state.
The woman tried confronting the teen but he immediately fled the scene, police said.
The severely injured baby was rushed to the King George's Medical University's (KGMU) pediatric surgery department.
Doctors who examined the infant said the brutal act has damaged her genitalia, including the vagina and anal canal.
“The incident has caused external damage of genitalia, including the vagina and anal canal, but the child is stable and conscious. However, there is some pain while urinating and during excretion, for which medication has begun. We have put her on antibiotics and are waiting for further assessment,” the Times of India quoted Professor JD Rawat, the head of the pediatrics surgery department, as saying.
“Because of the collection of fecal matter in the area, an infection has developed, which is why repairing is not possible right now. We will put her under anesthesia for further examination and only after the infection subsides, if required, reconstructive surgery will be done,” he added.
The accused teen was arrested on Monday, police said. He has been booked for rape, sexual assault, and under sections of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 19-year-old neighbor who took the child to an isolated room on the pretext of playing with her.
The heart-wrenching incident happened on Oct. 23 in Ludhiana, an industrial city in the north Indian state of Punjab. The accused teen, identified as Karan, a daily wage laborer was arrested on Oct. 26.
The victim and her 6-year-old brother were home alone and their parents, both factory workers were at their place of work when the alleged incident occurred.
The alleged pedophile came to their home and took away the girl to an isolated room in the laborer’s quarters, saying that he wanted to play with her, but when she returned she was crying, the victim's brother said.
Her parents returned home from work to find bloodstains on her clothes. When they asked her what had happened, she reportedly told that Karan had touched her. The child, however, failed to give any more details of the alleged abuse, police said.
The police received a complaint and shortly after, the suspect was arrested, Division Number 6 station house officer, Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar said.
