A teenager has been accused of brutally killing his sister-in-law after she reportedly reprimanded him, asking him to stop playing games on his phone and look for a job in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India on Saturday, June 25.

The teen suspect, Irshad Alam, 19, allegedly strangled his 25-year-old sister-in-law Sahiba to death after she told him to get off his phone and look for a job to support their family's expenses. After choking the victim to death, Alam then forced rat poison down the woman's throat to stage the killing as a suicide, Hindustan Times reported.

On Saturday, June 25, Alam called up the police and informed them that his sister-in-law had consumed rat poison and taken her own life. Following this, officers responded to the scene, retrieved Sahiba’s body for an autopsy, and registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident.

However, two days later, when Sahiba's post-mortem report was released on Tuesday, June 28, the findings revealed that there were no traces of rat poison in the victim's stomach. The autopsy report also bared that the victim had ligature marks on her neck and that the cause of her death was death due to strangulation.

Following the revelation, the officers took Alam into custody for questioning. During the interrogation, Alam reportedly confessed to committing the crime.

According to Alam, the victim constantly bickered and argued with him whenever she saw him on his phone playing games. Sahiba reportedly recently demanded that Alam contribute towards their family expenditure or else move out of the house. On Friday, June 24, Sahiba again found Alam playing games on his phone and the two engaged in a heated argument. This enraged Alam and allegedly spurred him to hatch a plan to murder Sahiba.

The following day, while Sahiba was alone in their house, Alam sneaked up behind her while she was in the kitchen and strangled her to death with a cloth. After killing her, Alam took out a rat kill bottle from his pocket and poured the rat poison into her mouth to make the crime scene look like a suicide.

Following the confession, Alam was arrested and charged with murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Sahiba was reportedly married to Alam's elder brother Zuber, a daily wage laborer, and they have three children together. They all stayed together in a single-storey house at Malwani, Mumbai.
