Call Jamie McMurray the Sonoma meister! The No. 1 McDonald's Chip Ganassi driver earns his third pole at Sonoma Speedway and his second in a rooow with a blistering track record lap of 98.350 mph during Saturday knockout. In an awesome display of performance under pressure, McMurray managed to just earn pole with just two minutes left of the second round of qualifying.

"This knockout qualifying is just an emotional rollercoaster," McMurray said. "From not making the top 12 and having to go out and bump your way back in and then being on the pole, there's a lot of highs and lows that go along with it."

Northern California natives AJ Allmendinger and Kyle Larson placed second and third on the grid. McMurray's 11th hour pole spoiled what could have been an all-Northern California front row!

"We obviously have a couple really good cars at Chip Ganassi Racing," said McMurray's teammate Kyle Larson. "It would have been nice to get the pole, but Jamie was really fast. Good day. A lot better than what I thought I was going to qualify."

"I wish we would have just stuck to the old way where everyone made one run," said Allmendinger. "Jamie put in a hell of a lap. Congrats to him."

Carl Edwards and Kurt Busche round out the top 5. Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Brian Vickers, Paul Menard, Joey Logano, Danica Patrick, and finally Casey Mears round the top 12. Saturday knockout also delivered some surprsies as road racing ace Marcos Ambrose was quickly knocked out despite three lap attempts. Ambrose will start way back at 23rd on the grid.

Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart also failed to make the cut for second round of qualifying. Jeff Gordon will start 15th while Tony Stewart will start from 21st.

"I just think it just shows how tough this series is, no matter what racetrack you're on now," Allmendinger said. "It's a difficult thing, especially in qualifying where everybody is so close and it's so critical to get that lap in. But that's what makes it fun."
