The Trump administration is sending hundreds of convicted Cubans to Mexico as it continues to carry out its crackdown on migrants, according to a new report.
The Miami Herald detailed that even though Havana accepts deportation flights, it has long rejected receiving nationals convicted of certain crimes.
In this context, the Trump administration has been removing the convicted Cubans, leaving them in a legal limbo as they lack documentation to form a new life there and unable to return to the U.S.
Some told the outlet they have been searching for work, food and shelter for weeks, sleeping on the streets in the meantime. Some were given the option of being taken to Mexico or be sent to an unspecified country in Africa. Others were not told where they were being sent, or dropped off in southern Mexico, near the Guatemala border, and told to "head south."
The people who spoke to the Herald said they have been convicted of crimes in the country, including drug dealing, domestic violence, theft, armed robbery and child abuse. They had also served prison sentences and had deportation orders for years.
"If you come to our country illegally and break our laws, you could end up in CECOT, Eswatini, Ghana, South Sudan, or another third country," Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told the Herald in a statement when asked about the practice.
"President Trump and Secretary (Kristi) Noem are not going to allow criminal illegal aliens to remain indefinitely in the U.S.," she added.
