President Donald Trump said he would support a Senate run in North Carolina by his daughter-in-law, Lara, after incumbent Thom Tillis announced he won't be seeking reelection following a fallout with the president.

"Somebody that would really be great is Lara, she grew up there," Trump said. However, he cast doubt about the possibility, saying she and her son Eric "live in Florida and they have a very good life."

Lara Trump is still reportedly thinking whether to run or not, leaving other Republican contenders in limbo until she makes a decision. She had previously voiced interest in the seat, even weighing entering the 2020 race but ultimately saying she wasn't ready for public office due to having two young children at the time, then aged 1 and 3.

Now, with her children a few years older, the question is whether she's prepared to step away from her lucrative speaking engagements, podcasting roles, her work within the Trump Organization, and her Fox News show, "My View with Lara Trump," which has significantly raised popularity among conservatives.

"She'd have to give it all up," an anonymous source told Politico. As Lara weighs the opportunity, other Republicans remain on standby. "I think people are really smart enough to not go in there," said another source close to the White House. "Everybody's kind of just been like, 'it's Lara's if she wants it,' The ball is in Lara Trump's court. It's that simple."

GOP insiders acknowledged that the president's daughter-in-law effectively holds the "right of first refusal," and until she makes her decision , which may not come until the fall, the field is expected to stay "frozen."

Tillis announced on Sunday he won't seek reelection as he was sustaining attacks from President Donald Trump over his opposition to his "big, beautiful" tax cut and spending bill.

"As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven't exactly been excited about running for another term," Tillis said in a statement when announcing his decision.

"That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. It's not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election." Trump celebrated the decision, saying it was "great news."
