Spanish-language TV network TelevisaUnivision is accusing Google of discriminating against Hispanic viewers by planning to drop the Spanish-language network from the core YouTube TV package on September 30, 2025. The decision, Univision says, would force millions of Latino households to pay an unfair surcharge, which the network is calling a "Hispanic tax."

In a strongly worded open letter published as a full-page ad across major U.S. newspapers, Daniel Alegre, CEO of TelevisaUnivision, denounced Google's plan as a clear abuse of market power.

"Google intends to remove Univision from its main YouTube TV package, forcing millions of Hispanics to pay 18% more for trusted news, sports, and entertainment content in Spanish," the letter warns. "This is nothing less than discriminatory."

Univision argues that removing the channel from the base bundle is not just a business decision but an attack on access to information for the nation's fastest-growing community. The network emphasizes its role as a lifeline for Spanish-speaking families during elections, natural disasters, and other moments of national importance.

"Univision is the trusted voice of Hispanics," the company declared. "By charging more for Univision, Google is silencing Hispanic voices and relegating our community to second-class status."

The Latin Times contacted Google for a response, but by the time this post was published, the company hadn't responded.

Critical Timing

The dispute comes in the middle of a politically charged season. Univision highlighted that Latinos are preparing to cast decisive votes in congressional redistricting battles in Texas and California, gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia, and next year's pivotal midterm elections in Florida and Georgia.

Univision warns that Google's actions could leave millions of Hispanic voters less informed at a moment when accurate information is essential for democracy.

If negotiations fail, Univision would become the only major network excluded from YouTube TV's $83 base package. To keep access, subscribers would need to pay an extra $15.

"Pay more or lose Univision. That's the choice Google is giving Hispanics," the company said. "It is unjust, it is discriminatory, and it must be stopped."

The Call to Action

Univision's letter ends with a direct demand:

"Hispanics should not be forced to choose between paying more or losing their trusted network. We call on Google to do the right thing and stop discriminating against our community."
