The 2013 NFL season is underway and after another successful opening week, only 2 games remain on the schedule before Week 1 book officially closes. While the San Diego Chargers and Houston Texans will meet in the late evening on September 9, the first Monday Night Football game of the season will precede the aforementioned AFC showdown. The defending NFC East champion Washington Redskins have high hopes for the 2013 season and as they get set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles and first-year NFL head coach Chip Kelly, all eyes will be on 'Skins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who underwent reconstructive surgery on his right knee in the offseason.
Griffin was tremendous last season, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns and although much of the national spotlight will be on his overall health, many football fans will also be interested to see the kind of offense Chip Kelly plans to run this season in Philly. Kelly comes over from a University of Oregon team known for its ability to use speed and athleticism to light up the scoreboard. With talents including quarterback Michael Vick, running back LeSean McCoy and wide receiver DeSean Jackson, Kelly hopes the firepower of this trio will be enough to compete on a week-by-week basis in the NFC.
When and Where to Watch Washington vs. Philadelphia
The Eagles and Redskins will begin their respective campaigns on Monday, September 9 with an NFC East battle set to kickoff at 6:55pm, ET from FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. Television coverage of the first Monday Night Football game of 2013 can be seen on the ESPN Network with an on-line live stream available through WatchESPN.
Team Preview - Philadelphia Eagles
Following a 4-12 campaign, the Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with long-time head coach Andy Reid. With Reid now leading the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles organization elected to dip into the college ranks for their next leader and after an intricate search, Oregon's Chip Kelly was named to his first NFL head coaching position.
Kelly's offense has been a hot topic of discussion since the day of his hiring and after announcing during the offseason that Michael Vick would open the season as starting quarterback, fans of the Eagles and NFL loyalists in general have been extremely interested in the potential of the new Eagles playbook, something Kelly says Michael Vick will be able to run successfully after throwing for only 2,362 yards and 12 TD's a year ago.
"The biggest thing with Mike that you saw was just his growth and improvement," Kelly told reporters. "He just kept learning the system. His willingness to learn, his passion for the game of football was evidenced since the first day we saw him."
Team Preview - Washington Redskins
While the Eagles certainly struggled in 2012, the Washington Redskins and rookie quarterback Robert Griffin were able to claim the franchise's first NFC East title in 13 seasons. The health of RG3 will certainly remain a pressing issue in D.C. and although many believed a level of dissention existed between Griffin and head coach Mike Shanahan after the head coach did not allow his quarterback to play during the preseason so he could rest last season's injury, the former Heisman Trophy winner says all is well with the Redskins and his first NFL head coach.
"I just want everybody to know that if there's any questions about a rift between me and coach, or if there's a conflict, there is no conflict," Griffin said during the preseason about his relationship with the coaching staff. "Coaches coach, I'm a player. Coach has a plan and I'm abiding by that plan. I'm doing everything that they ask me to do. I trust those guys. They want me to have a long career and that's what this part of this plan is about."
