Unlike the marriages of their sons Prince Charles and Prince Andrew to their respective ex-spouses Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, which ended in divorces, Queen Elizabeth II’s marriage to Prince Philip remains as stable as a rock. They will soon be celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary next month, and it’s probably safe to say that they’ve found their lifetime partner in each other.

But royal family fans just love to speculate, and even the longevity of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s union is not an off-limit topic. In fact, someone posted the query “What could cause Queen Elizabeth to divorce Prince Philip?” on the Q&A site Quora, which yielded a few interesting responses from its users.

Quora user Bette Stalford doesn’t believe that it’s going to happen at all because they’ll just work out whatever problems they might face in the future. “After All these years? No matter what has or hasn’t happened in their marriage, they have obviously worked hard at it, they’re like a right Royal pair of old slippers, perfectly matched, cosy and comfortable,” Stalford wrote.

Douglas Thomson, another Quora user, basically agreed with Stalford’s assessment that divorce between the royals is impossible but highlighted their age as the main factor. “I’m struggling to find a generous interpretation of this question,” Thomson replied. “What would cause a woman of 93 to divorce a man of 98 after 72 years of marriage?”

Likewise, Quora user Diana Donald believes that divorce is impossible for two reasons. According to her, the Queen is the type of person who will honor a vow no matter what. In addition, divorce is against her belief.

“Given that Her Majesty has publicly declared Prince Philip to be ‘absolutely my rock’, I wonder why you would ask such a question,” Donald wrote in response. “Apart from anything else Queen Elizabeth is a deeply committed Christian and therefore would never countenance divorce.”

However, there was one person who believes that Elizabeth II divorcing Philip might not be impossible. He even gave a few reasons that might convince Her Majesty on divorcing the Duke of Edinburgh.

“Adultery. Red handed adultery. Embarrassment. Purposeful embarrassment aimed at disempowerment of the throne. Stopping the apocolypse. Apocolypse meaning an unveiling of something which was previously hidden from the public that will bring an end to an era and begin a new paradyme,” Andrew Thomas Ackerman wrote on Quora.
