Younger royal family fans who only saw Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, in his later years might only know him for his off-color jokes and other famous blunders. However, a quick look at some of his old black-and-white photos would show that he was quite a dashing young man back then and must have been popular with the ladies.

Among his three male children, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, there is one prince who got not only the Duke of Edinburgh’s looks but also some aspects of his personality. In addition, this royal is reportedly the only one who can get Prince Philip out of his “black sulks,” which he is prone to.

“The only person who can shake the Duke of Edinburgh out of one of his famous black sulks is Andrew,” journalist Sue Arnold wrote. “His relationship with his father is important.”

Prince Andrew likewise got some of the Mountbatten traits from his father. “Of the three boys he is the most like Philip, inheriting, along with his father's looks and easy charm, the legendary Mountbatten arrogance,” Arnold continued.

In 1982, Prince Andrew became the most eligible bachelor in England since Prince Charles was already married to Princess Diana at that time. His popularity rose even further after he returned from the Falklands War that he even spawned a phenomenon called “Andymania,” which swept the nation.

He even started fits of fainting among the ladies when he made a public appearance as he was tasked to switch on the Regent Street Christmas lights. “Girls started screaming in anticipation if anyone so much as went near the balcony,” biographer Andrew Morton wrote in his book “Andrew: The Playboy Prince.” “Near hysteria gripped the tightly-packed throng,” he continued.

Naturally, he had a lot of romantic entanglements that displeased his parents. “Andrew's romantic escapades, together with some much publicised midshipman japes (he has a penchant for practical jokes), earned him the reputation of Royal Lout-About-Town, a label that saddened his mother and annoyed his father,” Sue Arnold wrote.

Nevertheless, the Duke of Edinburgh was rather proud of his son as he can see his younger self in Andrew. “Secretly, however, Prince Philip admires Andrew's macho action-man image — it reminds him of his own youth,” the journalist explained.
