Princess Diana reportedly experienced an awkward Christmas with the royal family several years ago. During one of her celebrations with Prince Charles’ relatives, the late Princess of Wales committed a huge blunder.

In the book “The Queen & Di: The Untold Story,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward said that prior to the festivities, Princess Diana opted to purchase expensive gifts for the royal family because she thought that they celebrate the occasion extravagantly. But the truth is that everyone preferred to give and receive cheap presents.

“In her generosity, Diana had spent time and money buying what she thought were presents appropriate to her new-found position,” Seward said. “What she failed to realize because no one had told her, was that in a family which has literally everything, small is beautiful — the cheaper the better,” she added.

Prince Charles’ ex-wife reportedly purchased expensive cashmere scarves and bath oils for the future king’s family, while everyone else handed out inexpensive presents. After Princess Diana’s gifts were opened by the royal family, they accepted the gifts — but it was with polite but withering condescension.

During another occasion, Princess Diana gave Prince Charles a Christmas gift that he seemingly hated. Since Princess Diana loved to dance, she decided to choreograph a three-minute dance routine to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl,” which she performed as a surprise on Christmas at Covent Garden.

But while the majority of the guests loved the Princess of Wales’ performance, the future king was reportedly not pleased with what she did. “Charles wasn’t terribly impressed, because he thought she was showing off,” a source said. “But in fact, it was incredibly courageous of her to go on stage,” the source added.

Princess Diana’s last Christmas with the royal family and Prince Charles took place in 1996, after her divorce from the heir apparent. At that time, the royal was photographed walking on Bond Street in Central London with a bouquet of flowers in her hand.

Less than one year later, on Aug. 31, 1997, Princess Diana passed away. She died following a fatal car crash in Paris.
