Prince Charles was only three when Queen Elizabeth became the Queen of England. No wonder he grew up being distant from his mother. Despite that, royal experts believe that Queen Elizabeth doesn’t deserve the backlash she has received from her own son for being an “absent mother.”

Because Prince Charles was still too young when Queen Elizabeth became queen, he doesn’t remember all the things his mother did for him when he was young. Young as he was at the time, he didn’t know how Queen Elizabeth struggled to juggle motherhood with her royal duties and how tough a decision it was for her to hire a nanny to look after him.

Queen Elizabeth may have been absent for most of Prince Charles’ formative years, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t care for her son. Actually, Her Majesty grew up in an era when it was completely normal to leave one’s babies at home with nannies.

According to former royal advisor Robert Lacy, even Queen Elizabeth grew up with nannies looking after her. “She had been brought up in that style herself, after all, with her parents leaving her at home and entrusting her entire schooling to a governess and home tutors,” Lacy said.

Because she had royal duties to attend to, Queen Elizabeth missed many of the important milestones in the life of Prince Charles. Prince Charles grew up being used to not seeing his mother with him. So when interviewed about his relationship with the Queen, he unreservedly said it was “inevitably the nursery staff” that was there for him to witness his first steps as a child.

Although Prince Charles makes it look like Queen Elizabeth is far from being the best mom in the world, royal experts say that Prince Charles should not be pointing a finger at his mom because Queen Elizabeth didn’t have a choice. As a queen, she had to be loyal to the crown, and her royal duties should always take precedence over her family.

Once, after Prince Charles publicly criticized Queen Elizabeth, his siblings immediately came to their mother’s defense. “Princess Anne and Princes Andrew and Edward have all made public their disagreement with Charles in his criticism of the parenting they received,” Lacy revealed. All of Prince Charles’ siblings felt their mother didn’t deserve to be judged that way, no matter how imperfect she was as a mother during their early years.
