At 93, Queen Elizabeth is still in the pink of her health. However, there have been rumors that she might make Prince Charles prince regent when she turns 95 so she can finally slow down on her royal duties and enjoy her final years.
Since the beginning of the decade, rumor has been swirling around that Prince Charles might be the prince regent for our times. The royal household has reportedly been contemplating the possibility of the Prince of Wales becoming prince regent soon as Queen Elizabeth is already too old to carry out her duties with grace. If that happens, then it will be the first time the Regency Act will be invoked for more than 200 years.
Once Prince Charles becomes a regent, he will be the one to preside over investitures and receptions. He will also carry on knighting Queen Elizabeth’s foremost subjects and present gongs, and he will be elevated at the Sovereign’s parade. He may also open the Olympic Games if he’s requested to do so.
Basically, Prince Charles will carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the Queen, such as going on official state visits abroad and inviting other world leaders to come to the U.K., declaring when the country is at war or the war is over and appointing archbishops and bishops of the Church of England.
His other responsibilities would include reading all the “red boxes” delivered to the Queen’s desk and representing the nation in times of great celebration or sorrow. He will also host royal garden parties and regularly visit charities. In short, he will be king in all but name until Queen Elizabeth dies.
If the Prince of Wales would take over the duties of Queen Elizabeth while she’s still alive, then the temporary succession would have little precedent despite still being governed by law. By nature, regency serves as a backdoor approach to succession and may be a curious way for Prince Charles to transition to becoming king.
The possibility of Prince Charles’ regency has raised questions as to whether or not he will be a good substitute for Queen Elizabeth. It’s not a secret that Prince Charles is an unpopular choice as king, as critics maintain that he’s pretty much flawed. While Queen Elizabeth is discreet and behaves in ways that a monarch is expected to behave, Prince Charles loves to interfere.
“By royal standards he is relatively strong, he enjoys both public life and the good life,” one royal expert noted. “His mother, by contrast, is a traditional conservative who is indifferent to publicity. The only thing against her is her age,” he added.
The royal expert said, however, that while Prince Charles is different from his mother, he’s prepared to be a regent or a king when the time comes. “Our sovereign and her son are so fantastically good at their jobs,” he said.
Also, while Prince Charles could be prince regent through Queen Elizabeth handing over all her duties without actually abdicating, royal experts claim that such a situation is far from happening now. Prince Charles will only be prince regent if the Queen is unable to fulfill her duties and responsibilities, but that is something that’s hard to imagine right now, considering Queen Elizabeth’s sharpness and strength at 93.
Also, royal expert Phil Dampier said that the only reason Queen Elizabeth would ever contemplate a regency is if she becomes seriously ill, either mentally or physically. “The Queen will certainly never abdicate,” said Dampier.
“At the moment, she is in excellent health and so she won’t be giving this serious thought right now. In fact, I know she has told friends that she wants to live to 100 like her mother. The only reason a regency would ever be contemplated if is she became seriously ill, either mentally or physically. But I don’t believe she would consider an artificial cut off time such as reaching 95. She will consider the situation as each year passes,” he added.
