When hybrid drive technology was first presented to the public, it was accepted as a system that can optimize fuel efficiency in urban stop-and-go traffic. As the technology evolved, supercars began to adopt the technology to improve fuel efficiency without compromising performance.
Falling squarely between the frugal and the exotic is the introduction of the all-new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Series. Featuring a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine mated to aan eight-speed steptronic automatic transmission that shares its housing with the electric motor. Combined, the powertrain produces an output of 335-hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels.
The engine, which is also used in the standard 335i, has won the international "Engine of the Year" award two years in a row. Coupled with a specialized high-voltage lithium-ion battery designed specifically for the 3 Series and an electric motor, the package stands to gain an additional max output of 55-hp as well as an instant surge of 155 lb.-ft. torque.
The ActiveHybrid 3 Series will not only be high-tech and highly efficient, the new BMW will be highly capable as well. 0-to-60 mph takes just 5.3 seconds and can continue acclerating until its electronically limited 155 mph.
Expect the new 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 to release in the U.S. market some time this fall. Prices will begin at $50,195 including destination and handling.
