Arsenal FC has a lot on its plate as they try to focus on the Europa League and Premier League. Though Mikel Arteta has already finalized the squads for the 2020-21 season, the name of Mesut Ozil remains in the air. The only problem there is that it is posing more as a distraction rather than help the Gunners’ cause.

With Arteta already deciding on who will be seeing action for the Gunners this season, Ozil has been the subject of outlets. Most are wondering about the omission even if the apparent reason is the German defender’s fit into the Gunners' plans. Despite knowing that angle, questions remain in the air and such is becoming a distraction for the club.

One player who believes that this is so is former Gunner Nigel Winterburn. For him, as long as Ozil is still tied with Arsenal, questions on his status will continue to linger. Winterburn spoke on the matter with FreeSuperTips.

“Mesut Ozil is a terrific player and the one thing that he does give you is that he will create chances but at the same time he is not going to give you that defensive side to the game, with and without the ball, which is why he hasn’t been selected,” Winterburn said.

The contract with Ozil will expire in the summer of 2021. But the Gunners can always find ways to part amicably. The best time for that to happen could be in January although the hefty price of the German’s contract is likely to pose problems. Hence, it all boils down to what the 32-year-old wants to do from there.

Despite getting offers from other leagues, Ozil prefers to stay at Emirates Stadium with hopes of playing. But even if he does not see action, the reality is that he is still getting paid for his lofty contract. Ozil is being paid £350,000-a-week ($456,000).

The opinions are divided on the case of Ozil. Some feel that he has no one to blame but himself for his plight. Others feel his talent is going to waste and that there is a deeper issue at hand that goes beyond playing the sport. One person who believes this is so is Arsene Wenger, Sky Sports reported.

"Mesut Ozil is an exceptional football player. What happens at the moment between him and the club looks to be more confrontational. It's not based only on sport,” Wenger said.
