Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat in the House Oversight Committee, said on Wednesday that he and his colleagues will "demand answers" regarding Jeffrey Epstein as President Donald Trump urges his followers to move on from the issue.
"It's obvious to the American public, someone is lying, and someone is trying to hide something," Garcia said on the House floor. "The truth is we don't know what the facts are in this case."
Garcia went on to say he "can't explain why the Trump administration have changed their minds on Epstein, but their behavior raises questions." "This is the time that we must demand answers, and the Oversight Committee is going to do just that."
However, The Hill noted that Democrats in the committee can't subpoena people on their own given the fact that they don't have a majority.
Trump, on his end, continues to face a revolt from his base over the matter. The president has lashed out at those showing their discontent, calling them "PAST supporters" on Wednesday. He went on to claim in a lengthy social media post that Democrats are behind the SCAM behind the "Jeffrey Epstein Hoax."
"My PAST supporters have bought into this "bullshit," hook, line, and sinker. They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years. I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax. Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore!"
But despite Trump's lashing out, several MAGA figure are unwilling to let the topic go. During a recent episode of his "War Room" podcast, former Trump advisor Steve Bannon predicted there will be a MAGA doomsday if the administration follows through on its decision not to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.
"You're going to lose 10% of the MAGA movement. If we lose 10% of the MAGA movement right now ... we're gonna lose 40 seats in '26," Bannon warned during a live recording last Friday. "We're gonna lose the president," he added.
Moreover, House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that he supports the release of the Epstein files, advocating for transparency between the government and the American people.
And Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert called for a special counsel to look into the Epstein files and nominated former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who himself was accused of sex trafficking and paying for sex with a minor.
