Stephen Lynch, the Democrats' acting ranking member in the House Oversight Committee, is demanding President Donald Trump provide information about Elon Musk's reported drug abuse, claiming that "the American people deserve to know" its "history and extent" and "any influence illicit drugs may have had on his efforts to illegally and recklessly dismantle our government."
Lynch added in a letter that Committee Democrats "twice requested information" regarding Musk's "background, including his reported history of drug use," but the White House and Trump officials "have refused to respond."
The letter goes on to reference a recent New York Times report claiming that Musk's use has been much more intense than previously known.
The outlet noted that Musk has told people he used so much ketamine that it was starting to affect his bladder, an effect of chronic use. Other drugs consumed by the billionaire include ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, as well as a daily medication box holding some 20 pills, including Adderall.
The report doesn't specify whether Musk was taking the drugs while holding a prominent role in Donald Trump's White House, but noted erratic behavior including high-profile fights with cabinet members.
The letter also cites "similar accounts of Mr. Musk consuming 'LSD, cocaine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, often at private parties around the world, where attendees sign nondisclosure agreements or give up their phones to enter.'"
Considering Musk's role in Trump's campaign and administration, including the donation of $250 million to the campaign and leading the Department of Government Efficiency, Lynch said the billionaire's "erratic" behavior "begs the question of whether Mr. Musk was under the influence of illicit substances while working in your White House."
"The American people deserve to know whether Mr. Musk was under the influence while
he gleefully took a "chainsaw" to our federal government," adds the letter, which requests four things from Trump: information regarding any consumption of drugs by Musk while working for the administration, whether Musk consumed drugs in the White House or other federal buildings, whether Musk used drugs during his presidential campaign, and if the president was aware of any drug consumption following his inauguration."
