Disney+ streaming service started with a healthy base of customers in the U.S. The market is currently dominated by Netflix, but that may not be the case for long because its rival has an advantage that could propel it to the top spot very soon.

The starting subscriber base of Disney+ has been revealed to be 1.9 million in the U.S., according to Business Insider. The data has been compiled by the analytics company Jumpshot.

The subscriber base is just a start because the company added around 100,000 new customers just before the launch on Sunday. This number is expected to grow as more subscribers in the U.S. join the company, and there may be explosive growth when the service becomes available across the globe.

By comparison, Netflix has 60.6 million subscribers in the U.S. and more than 150 million across the globe, Screen Rant reported. This shows the massive opportunity for Disney because the data Jumpshot compiled revealed that 34% of the subscribers already had at least one other subscription to a streaming service.

The online streaming market is not a zero sum game, and people don’t have to choose between Netflix and Disney+. If every individual who streams movies subscribes to two or more companies, there is a huge market that can be tapped by Disney.

There is one advantage that Disney has that can help it attract more customers and make it a top player in the industry. The subscribers to this service will not only get access to the huge collection of content from classic movies and Fox content, but they will also get to watch content from popular franchises like “Star Wars” and Marvel.

Disney is working on some new content for its popular franchises. The streaming service has just released the first “Star Wars” live action series titled “The Mandalorian,” and it will also launch new Marvel TV shows, making it a must have streaming service.
