Doctors at a hospital reportedly removed 63 steel spoons from a man's stomach during surgery in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The patient, identified as 31-year-old Vijay Kumar, reportedly complained of severe stomach pain and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital by his family members for immediate treatment.

The doctors suspected the presence of some foreign objects in his stomach and recommended surgery. When the hospital staff took an X-ray scan of the man's stomach, it was found that the cause behind the man's pain was that he had several steel spoons inside his stomach, the Times Of India reported.

Following this, Kumar underwent a two-hour-long operation on Tuesday, Sept. 27, to remove the spoons. By the end of the surgery, doctors extracted about 63 steel spoons from inside his stomach and intestines.

Dr. Rakesh Khurana, the doctor who operated upon Vijay, said, "He was brought to me 15 days back and in the X-ray, we found something metallic in his stomach and large intestines."

The doctors said that they cannot say with certainty when the patient had consumed these spoons.

The patient was reportedly a drug addict and was undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation center in Shamli for the past seven months. According to the patient's family members, Kumar was forced to consume the spoons at the deaddiction center where he was admitted a year ago, Hindustan Times reported.

However, the patient reportedly gave contradicting accounts to hospital staff regarding when and how he consumed the spoons. He once told the doctors that the staffers at the rehabilitation center forced him to swallow the spoons. However, another time, he told the doctors that he had swallowed the spoons at his own will.

“We may be able to ascertain the facts once the patient regains consciousness,” added Dr. Khurana.

According to the doctors, the heads of all 63 spoons were removed before consumption.

The team of doctors who performed the successful surgery revealed that the patient is now in stable condition and that he will be fit to be released from the hospital in a couple of days.

Following the incident, no police complaint has been filed on the matter as of now.
