The “Elementary” TV series ended with the villain seemingly dead and Joan (Lucy Liu) getting what she wanted with Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller). In recent interviews, showrunner Rob Doherty shared his insights about the finale episode and talked about some scenes that the fans didn’t get to see.

There was a bit of tension and uncertainty when the finale episode showed Joan’s struggle with cancer. However, the flash forward not only confirmed that she was in good health in the future, but she also had what she always wanted- a family.

The funeral in the flash forward was that of Jamie Moriarty (Natalie Dormer), but the producers did not leave any doubts about the character because Sherlock thinks she is still alive. In a recent interview with TV Line, Doherty confirmed that the detective is right and the villain is still alive.

Doherty explained that they borrowed a lot from the canon stories while writing the last two episodes of the show, and this is why Moriarty was so significant in the “Elementary” finale. Apart from this, the writers felt that the villain was the only way they could bring Sherlock out of his hiding. Just the mention of her name was enough to keep the detective and Joan on their toes, even though it was later revealed that Moriarty wasn’t behind what was happening.

The fact that Moriarty is still out there is something that Doherty liked to end with. The presence of the villain out there in society means that Sherlock and Joan will have to be prepared to face her in the future, even though there are no plans to make those episodes.

One scene that the fans didn’t get to see in the “Elementary” finale is Sherlock taking action to confirm his suspicion that his nemesis is still alive. In an interview with ET Online, the producer revealed that Sherlock goes to Moriarty’s grave later and digs it up, only to find an empty casket.
