A 75-year-old retired Indian police officer opened fire at his two sons following a heated argument, killing one of them.

Bhagwan Patil, retired assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with the Mumbai police, allegedly fired three bullets at his two sons, 34-year-old Vijay and 32-year-old Sujay, from his licensed revolver at their Airoli residence on Monday, June 14.

According to police, the accused, who would assault his wife, had a troubled relationship with his sons due to his violent behavior.

On Monday, Vijay reportedly received a call from an insurance company regarding Patil’s car. The brothers then went to meet their father at his home to resolve the issue.

The accused wanted his sons to pay the insurance premiums for his vehicle which they denied. This gave way to a heated argument eventually leading to the fatal incident.

"On Monday evening, Bhagwan called Vijay and Sujay to his Airoli house to resolve the matter about payment of insurance premium. When Vijay and Sujay met their father at his residence, an argument ensued between them and Patil brandished a revolver to threaten his sons," Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivraj Patil told the Times of India.

When the accused pulled out his revolver, Sujay tried to grab it out of his father’s hand.

The accused then opened fire striking both his sons.

Two bullets struck Vijay, one in the abdomen and the other in his shoulder. He was rushed to the nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead later that evening.

Sujay, however, managed to dodge the bullets but suffered minor injuries during his escape. One of the bullets grazed his abdomen, police said. He was treated at the hospital for his injuries and later discharged. He then filed a complaint against his father for the alleged attack

The accused has been arrested and police have seized the murder weapon.

"Vijay died while he was under observation at the hospital. We arrested Patil and also confiscated his .32 revolver," Yogesh Gawde, senior inspector of Rabale police station, said.

The charges imposed on the accused are unclear at this time.
