A 9-year-old boy is in serious condition after his father accidentally shot him in the chest at the end of an alleged road rage incident.

ABC News' Houston station KTRK said the incident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on Friday, June 11, in Houston's Fifth Ward in the city's eastern part.

The father drove the vehicle with the 9-year-old boy inside at the time. He believed another car was following them and pulled out a gun.

The two made it home safely, but the gun inadvertently discharged while the guy was attempting to holster it, and his kid was shot in the chest.

Afterward, the child's father rushed his son to the hospital. The 9-year-old boy was classified in critical condition but is expected to survive the unintentional shooting.

It's unclear whether the couple was being followed or if there was a genuine case of road rage.

Houston police said (via The New York Post) that the father is unlikely to face criminal charges. They believe it was an accident.

While the child recovers from his gunshot wound at Texas Children's Hospital, his father cooperates with the investigation.
