Prince Philip and Meghan Markle share one heartbreaking similarity even though their roles and position in the royal family are quite different. Both royals had to give up something close to their hearts after they wed Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry, respectively.

The Duke of Edinburgh joined the Royal Navy after he graduated from Dartmouth Naval College in 1939. While there, the dad of four reached the rank of Commander, and he also participated in the force during World War II.

But after the Queen ascended the throne on Feb. 6, 1952, Prince Philip was left with no other choice but to give up his flourishing career. Since Her Majesty’s role as the monarch was regarded with more importance, Prince Philip was left with no other choice but to bid his work goodbye.

“Philip’s role as Consort is far from the role he would ideally have chosen, in the navy he would probably have risen high had not the King’s failing health forced him to terminate a promising career,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express. And after giving up his career, Prince Philip also had to endure the thought that he was only second to his wife.

Several decades later, Meghan also had to give up her successful career as an actress in Hollywood to join Prince Harry and the royal family. Meghan was still starring in “Suits” when she and Prince Harry started dating. Shortly after their engagement, the Duchess of Sussex announced her departure from the show.

But unlike Prince Philip, Meghan didn’t seem to mind that she had to give up her acting career to be part of the royal family. During her engagement interview with BBC, the former actress said that she sees what happened as a change because she’s entering a new chapter of her life.

“And also keep in mind I’ve been working on my show for seven years,” she said. “I feel really proud of the work I have done there and now it’s time to, as you said work — work as a team with — with you,” she added, referring to Prince Harry.
