Prince Charles is the longest-serving heir apparent to the throne. He was only three years old when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, became the monarch. He spent most of his life preparing for his role as king. But according to recent reports, royal insiders prefer for him to abdicate in favor of another royal.

Born on Nov. 14, 1948, Prince Charles has been the first in line to the throne for more than 67 years now, making him the longest-serving heir apparent. He beat the previous record holder, his great-great-grandfather, King Edward VII, who held the same role for 59 years, two months and 13 days.

Queen Elizabeth II has long been preparing Prince Charles to take over her post as the head of the monarchy. In recent years, Her Majesty has turned over major responsibilities to her eldest son. For instance, it is now the Prince of Wales who does most of the official travels abroad on behalf of his mother.

However, a recent report by CheatSheet mentioned some rumors swirling around saying that royal insiders might want Prince Charles to abdicate the throne for another royal. But the royal mentioned in the rumor is not Prince William, the second in line to the throne, but Charles’ younger sibling Prince Andrew.

The publication noted, at his age, that the Prince of Wales might no longer want the monarchy’s top post. “The rumors are based on how Charles is now 70 years old and might not want to spend his final days ruling the monarchy,” CheatSheet wrote.

Should Prince Charles decide to abdicate, it would be his son, Prince William, who would be the next king based on succession rules. But, as some fans have pointed out, Prince Andrew would also be a valid candidate for the job. After all, at the age of 59, Andrew has more experience than William and could be a better choice for the position. But based on the article, there are those who apparently believe that Prince Andrew might be a better option because “Andrew has more experience than William.”

The problem with this theory is that determining the next monarch is not done via a popularity contest. Thus, Prince Andrew has no hope of ascending the throne unless everyone above him in the line can’t become the monarch for some reason.

In addition, Prince Charles did not make any indication that he is stepping down. After waiting for so long, all the preparations he made will be in vain if he decides to quit the race when the finish line is now in sight.

But if it were a popularity contest, it will still not be Prince Andrew’s turn. In a recent Daily Star Online poll, Britons clearly want Prince William to be the next king, with around 59 percent of the respondents giving their nod to the Duke of Cambridge.
