It’s been one month since former Miami Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident along with two friends. Fernandez was just 24 years old when the fatal incident occurred, and with no witnesses, little was known about the tragedy.

Some developing news have come forth, however.

According to the Miami Herald, Fernandez and his two friends “had a strong odor of alcohol on them when their bodies were recovered by divers,” according to a search warrant affidavit. The young Cuban pitcher has never had any known legal issues, nor has any problem with substance abuse ever been linked to Fernandez. Many people did predict alcohol was a contributing factor soon after the crash occurred.

That same report also noted that toxicology results have not yet been released to the public. We also don’t know (and probably never will) if Fernandez was even the one driving the boat. Furthermore, a receipt for alcohol from a bar was found by local investigators in a pocket in one of the three men, however that person has not been identified.

Fernandez’s pregnant girlfriend was reportedly fighting with him the day before he was killed. She told investigators the day after the crash that she urged Fernandez not to go out on the boat.

Fernandez had a promising career ahead of him. He won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013 with an outstanding 2.19 ERA. This season Fernandez posted a career high 16 wins and was selected to his second All Star Game. After Fernandez’s death, the Marlins, and many other teams, honored the young pitcher.

The crash is still under investigation.
