Kate Middleton had the most surprising response to her second split from Prince William. The future king reportedly felt claustrophobic in their relationship; that’s why he asked for space from Kate.

After dating on and off for five years, rumors spread in 2007 that Prince William would finally propose to Kate. However, not only did a proposal not take place; Prince William also decided to split from Kate briefly.

Instead of crying her heart out over their separation, the Duchess of Cambridge reportedly took their break up in stride. At one point, she also told her closest friends that she intends to live her life to the fullest as a single woman.

Kate was photographed leaving the royal nightspot Mahiki with Prince William’s good friend, Charles Morshead. The sighting sparked speculations that the two were an item. However, friends of Kate said that the Duchess of Cambridge wasn’t looking for anything serious at that time.

During her split from Prince William, Kate also signed up for a charity challenge with an all-female dragon boat racing crew called the Sisterhood. The elite group of female athletes took part in the venture of aiming to row across the Channel to raise money for children’s hospices.

Around the same time, Prince William decided to get back together with Kate. And three years after their split, the Duke of Cambridge finally got down on one knee and asked Kate to marry him. Luckily for Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge said yes.

Months before their wedding, the newly engaged couple sat down for an interview with ITV News. During their conversation, Kate and Prince William both admitted that their split was necessary to strengthen their relationship.

“I think at the time I wasn’t very happy about it but actually it made me a stronger person,” Kate said. “You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger. I really valued that time for me as well, although, I didn’t think it at the time!” she added.

Prince William and Middleton tied the knot on April 29, 2011.
