Lin-Manuel Miranda will reprise his award-winning role of Alexander Hamilton when the "Hamilton" Broadway show travels to Puerto Rico in 2019. The limited engagement will last three weeks and run from January 8 to the 27th of 2019. Teatro UPR will be the venue where the Tony-winning musical will show. The theatre suffered damage during the landfall of Hurricane Maria this past September.

"Bringing Hamilton: An American Musical to Puerto Rico is a dream that I’ve had since we first opened at The Public Theater in 2015," Miranda said in a statement posted by THR. “When I last visited the island, a few weeks before Hurricane Maria, I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico, but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of Maria we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever."

"Hamilton" made its Off-Broadway debut at The Public Theater in February 2015. Six months later, it was transferred to Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The successful show won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The popular production is nominated in 16 categories at the Tony Awards.

At the Tony Awards 2016, Miranda took many awards and delivered emotional speeches throughout the night. The Orlando shooting had just happened and the star paid tribute to all the victims. “My wife is the reason anything gets done. She notches me towards promise my degrees. She is a perfect symphony of one,” Miranda began. “We chase the melodies that seem to find us, until they’re finished songs and start to play. When senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised. Not one day. This show is proof that history remembers. We live through times where hate and fear seem stronger. We rise and fall and light from dying embers. Remembrances that hope and love last longer. Love is love is love is love is love is love. It cannot be killed or swept aside. I sing Vanessa’s symphony; Eliza sings her song and fill the world with music, love and pride,” he concluded.

At the end of 2016, Miranda was named Entertainer of the Year by the Associated Press. "There's been more than a little good luck in the year itself and the way it's unfolded," he said of the honor. "I continue to try to work on the things I've always wanted to work on and try to say yes to the opportunities that I'd kick myself forever if I didn't jump at them."

Lin-Manuel Miranda has been actively supporting the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following the devastation left by Hurricane Maria. He composed a song with all proceeds going to help the victims.

"The initial response to the release of 'Almost Like Praying' on October 6th has been overwhelming: a true testament to the American people's love for and desire to help the people of Puerto Rico. When WNBC approached us to help further the Hispanic Federation's commitment to providing relief for those impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Maria, we jumped at the chance to provide a deeper look behind the making of the song," Miranda said. "I'm hopeful that, by sharing it with this special, we will continue to do more good for the people on the island we love so much. There is still a lot to be done, but, together, I know we can make a world of difference."
