A 28-year-old man reportedly behind the rape of 30 kids done in a week over in Chimolo, Mozambique has been apprehended. The man allegedly hails from Manica Province and preyed on kids aged between six to seven years old.

According to reports, the man carried out his outrageous activities during the 7 de Abril Quatres in Chimoio City. He did his handiwork while the parents of the minors were out working. To lure his victims, the man used money according to the Mozambique Republic Police (PRM). The man’s identity was not revealed.

The sickening attack on kids adds to the growing problem of cases of rape in Manica Province. More than 37% of women in Mozambique are victims of physical and sexual violence per the latest Demographic and Health Survey. Sex offenders could be jailed for up to 12 years, something that activists feel is too lenient.

Aside from that, Mozambique has not been spared from criticism for requiring victims to file an official complaint before they take action. Such has forced the hand of the United Nations (UN) to enter the picture and work with the government and civil society organizations to address the violence against women and kids through the Spotlight Initiative. This also covers the issue of child marriages and health issues plaguing the country.

This comes not long after reports of a young mother being repeatedly raped and beaten for 11 days by 23 soldiers in Ethiopia. The 27-year-old was even forced nails and rocks into her private part.

According to the woman, soldiers tied her up and marched her through fields to a bush camp where she was raped and beaten for more than a week, Reuters reported. She is just one of many victims reporting horrific sexual violence by Ethiopian and allied Eritrean soldiers.
