A 31-year-old man who is accused of killing his elderly mother after she allegedly refused to give him money to buy alcohol has been arrested and charged with murder, authorities said.

The arrested man, Sachin Kulte, a resident of a township on Abhinav college road, in Narhe, Pune, India is remanded to police custody on Sunday, Oct.17, for the murder of his 60-year-old mother as Vimal Dattopanth Kulte at their home following an altercation over money, according to the police.

Investigators said the accused, a part-time driver has a drinking habit and because of which his wife and son live away from him.

According to the police, the incident came to light after the victim’s 44-year-old daughter filed a police complaint accusing her brother of murdering their mother.

She told the police that her brother came to her home and informed her about their mother’s death, but did not reveal how she had died.

“He had already killed the mother and she was in their house in a bed. He went to his sister’s house and told her that their mother had passed away. They both rushed to his house and on the way he told her that they should not inform anyone and take her directly to a crematorium. The woman went upstairs and the man remained downstairs. When he realized that the woman was insisting on informing the police, he fled from downstairs,” the Hindustan Times quoted Assistant Inspector of Sinhagad road police station, P.B. Kanse as saying.

The officer said the victim’s husband died a few years ago and had left her a plot of land and some money.

The accused often engaged in heated arguments with his mother over money and reportedly physically assaulted her whenever she refused, police said.

“He used to beat her up when she did not have the money,” the officer added.

Emergency services and police officers responded to the home and pronounced the death. The victim’s body was sent to Sassoon hospital for an autopsy, following which doctors told the police that the victim had been injured with sharp weapons, rods, as well as fists and kicks.

“She died of multiple injuries. He apparently used his Kada (thick metal ring or bracelet usually worn on the hands or wrists), a knife from the kitchen, and a wooden stick to beat her and caused these injuries, including head injuries, which later led to her death,” officer Kanse said.

The accused was arrested without incident, police said. He has been charged under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He is currently continuing in police custody at the Sinhgad road police station.
