A man has been reported dead of severe burn injuries after he accidentally fell into a large cauldron of boiling porridge in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The deceased, identified only as Muthukumar, was reportedly assisting in the preparation of a large batch of porridge for the Aadi festival at the Muthu Mariamman temple near Palanganatham in Madurai City, Tamil Nadu, India on Friday, July 29, when things took a tragic turn.

Aadi festival is a monsoon festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, India. The festival pays tribute to water for blessing mankind with peace, prosperity, and happiness. During the festival, porridge is cooked and distributed to the public in honor of Goddess Amman.

Muthukumar reportedly accidentally leaned against one of the huge metal pots in which koozh, or hot porridge, was being prepared. As he backed into the cauldron, alarmed workers warned him and told him to stay away from the pot.

However, he lost his balance and accidentally fell into the large container of boiling porridge, and struggled to get out of it. Seeing Muthukumar in agony, bystanders tried to help. However, they were at first unable to pull him out of the boiling cauldron. The group of people subsequently worked together to topple the entire pot to rescue the man, the Times Of India reported.

Muthukumar, who suffered 65% burn injuries throughout his body, was immediately rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment. However, Muthukumar succumbed to his serious burn injuries and died on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Following the tragedy, the authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and recovered CCTV surveillance footage of the accident from the scene. Meanwhile, a preliminary investigation conducted by the officers revealed that Muthukumar suffered from bouts of epilepsy.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a man allegedly killed his wife and proceeded to boil her remains in a cauldron in the Sindh province of Pakistan on Wednesday, July 13, Latin Times reported.

On Wednesday, July 13, after a heated confrontation with his wife Nargis, the accused Ashiq allegedly suffocated her to death with a pillow. After killing Nargis, he then boiled her body in a cauldron in the kitchen of the private school where he worked. He allegedly committed the horrific act in front of his six children.

The incident came to light after the victim’s 15-year-old daughter called the police after Ashiq fled with three of his children following the harrowing murder. After the police responded to the scene, they found Nargis’s body inside a cauldron in the kitchen of the private school.

According to a preliminary investigation, it is speculated that the husband forced his wife to engage in illicit relationships in exchange for money. However, when she refused to do as he demanded, he then murdered her by strangling her to death in front of their six children.
