A man has been sentenced to six months in jail in Singapore for punching his domestic help in the face after she reportedly told him that he ate too much.

Suriya Krishnan, 25, of Indian origin, was handed a six-month jail sentence on Tuesday, Feb. 8, and was ordered to pay the victim, a 27-year-old Myanmar national, US$6,325 (8,500 Singapore Dollars) in compensation after he reportedly jabbed the maid three times in the face and fractured her nose after she allegedly commented on how he ate a lot, NDTV reported.

The incident happened on May 29, 2020, while Krishnan and his family were celebrating his father's birthday in the flat. Before the birthday celebrations began, Krishnan was reported to have consumed a 750-ml bottle of liquor and was intoxicated.

At around 8.30 p.m, Krishnan's mother instructed the victim to cut some jelly for Krishnan. When the victim went to the kitchen to do so, Krishnan followed her and asked her to prepare some more food for him.

The victim then let out a remark saying that Krishnan had already eaten a lot of food. Krishnan, who was also upset that the victim did not cut the jelly in the manner that he wanted, started scolding the helper. He left the kitchen when his mother intervened in the confrontation, however, he later returned and punched the maid's face three times, the Free Press Journal reported.

Following the assault, the victim sought medical treatment and was found to have suffered fractures to her right orbital floor and lamina papyracea, around her eye region. The victim was admitted to the hospital and was later discharged for outpatient follow-up treatment.

Krishnan reportedly pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt to a domestic helper where the attack was not intended to be grievous but turned out to be so. The judge also considered the second charge of Krishnan kicking the victim's head, shoulder, and thigh, causing grievous injuries.

After considering the charges, the judge sentenced Krishnan to serve six months of jail time in addition to financial compensation for the victim. If he cannot pay the compensation amount, Krishnan will have to serve another one month in default.

Krishnan's lawyer said that his client will be unable to pay the compensation amount and that he will serve the extended jail term.
