Less than a year removed from claiming another Barclays Premier League title, Manchester United finds themselves in unusual territory with three months remaining in the season. Sitting sixth in the twenty-team league, the defending champs are well out of position for another championship run and have a lot of work to do if they're to secure a top four position come season's end. Earning one of the top 4 slots is significant when it comes to the 2014-2015 UEFA Champions League since each of the 4 clubs automatically qualify for a place in the field.

While first-year boss David Moyes and company would ultimately like to focus their attention on the crucial upcoming match against second place Liverpool, multiple reports indicate that a developing situation concerning one of United's star players is beginning to throw added focus to a difficult situation. Growing increasingly frustrated with the current campaign, Red Devils star scorer Robin van Persie could depart Old Trafford in the near future with his former club Arsenal serving as the preferred destination. RVP spent 8 seasons at Emirates Stadium from 2004 to 2012 but with United's struggles continuing and his relationship with boss David Moyes shaky, the 30-year-old Netherlands star could seek a return to his former home.

One of the biggest signs that Van Persie – who carries a tag of £240,000-per-week – was growing unhappy with Manchester United came after the Red Devils' 2-0 to Olympiakos in the opening leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Considered one of the worst performances of the season for Man U, the loss to their Greek opponents struck a nerve with RVP, who said after the game that there are times when his teammates get in his way and prevent him from contributing on the offensive end.

“Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in,” he said after the opening leg loss. “And when I see that, it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well. So that forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. And, unfortunately, they are often playing in my zones. I think that's a shame.”

Whether or not Robin van Persie sports another kit next season remains to be seen but as long as Man U continues to struggle and RVP remains unsettled, expect a cloud of uncertainty to hover over him at Old Trafford.
