The murder of Diana Báez, the sister of música mexicana singer Virlán García, has shocked Mexico. Diana, only 29 years old, was found dead in her home in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, a result of injuries inflicted by a sharp object.

Local authorities were alerted by the neighbors, who reported a plume of smoke coming from her residence. This led local firefighters to discover her body. This tragic event is currently being investigated as a potential femicide by the Sonora State Attorney General's Office (FGJE).

Femicide, defined as the intentional killing of women because of their gender, remains a critical issue in Mexico. In 2022, some 3,754 women and girls were murdered, with only 947 cases classified as feminicides. According to international women organizations, this highlights the severe underreporting and misclassification of gender-based violence in the country. Activists and civil society organizations argue that many femicides are often recorded as homicides to artificially lower femicide statistics

According to Mexican media, the prime suspect in Diana's case is her partner, Julián A., who allegedly stabbed her to death. The police report indicates that she had knife wounds in her back. The body was found on a mattress in her bedroom.

The working theory is that he then attempted to conceal the crime by setting the house on fire. Reports indicate that Julián, who was also Diana's trainer, has been detained. This brutal act has left the community of San Luis Río Colorado in a state of mourning and shock, with many calling for swift justice.

Diana reportedly left her two children orphaned. "Two little boys without their mommy. We are going to miss you so much," wrote producer and musician Salvador Yeo on Facebook along with photos of Diana. "It's about time there is a death penalty in our country," he sentenced, calling for justice for his friend.

"Many who know me for our convictions will disagree with me, but this time I think it is time for the P. de Mte. to exist in our country.
Two little boys without their mommy.
We will miss you very much.
Big hug to Vicky Garcia and all the family.
Rest in peace comadrita."

Neither Virlán García, a regional mexicano singer, who was highlighted by Billboard as a "talent to watch" in 2020, nor his family have said anything about the crime so far.
