Once again, Mercedes-Benz demonstrates its blistering qualifying pace as drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton lock out the front row of the grid. Being the quickest at Monaco takes the biggest of talents but Rosberg made it look easy, pacing the street circuit 0.318 seconds faster than his teammate.
Changing weather conditions caused teams to struggle as Q1 and Q2 were run on intermediates to cope with the wet conditions. By the end of Q3, a drying line began to form. A well timed hot lap towards the ending minutes allowed Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton to lock 1-2.
Following the Mercedes are followed by reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel for Red Bell along with teammate Mark Webber in fourth. Kimi Raikkonen clinches 5th on the grid ahead of Ferrari's sensational Fernando Alonso in 6th. Team McLaren's Sergio Perez managed to outqualify team leader Jenson Button, who are 7th and 9th, respectively. Splitting the McLarens are Force Indias' Adrian Sutil. Finally, Jean-Eric Vergne of Scuderia Torro Rosso.
Crashing heavily during practice, Ferrari driver Felipe Massa starts Monaco all the way at the back. Acknowledging his disadvantage, Massa is hopeful for a lucky break.
"Monaco is difficult to overtake at, we know, but anything can happen."
