Disney has just released the first official trailer for the live-action remake of “Mulan,” teasing key differences from the original animated film. From its overall tone and characterization to its depiction of some of the most remarkable scenes in the film, here are the ways the live-action remake of “Mulan” differs from its animated version.

The Village

The trailer offers a first glimpse of the village where Mulan and her family lives. It looks far more jazzed up than the village featured in the original film, which had a more simplistic design.

Mulan’s Father

In the original film, Mulan’s father was characterized by his remarkable mustache and beard. The trailer for the “ Mulan” live-action remake reveals that Mulan’s father is lacking those distinctive features.

Mulan’s Sister

The live-action film will feature Mulan’s sister, Hua Xiu — a character that was not present in the original film. In the animated original, Mulan was the only child of her parents.

“Honor To Us All”

One of the best scenes in the original film was the part where Mulan sang “Honor To Us All.” But since the live-action remake is not a musical, it’s not going to feature that scene. One scene in the trailer, however, shows Mulan uttering the words “bring honor to us all.”

“Reflection”

In the original film, Mulan sang Lea Salonga’s “Reflection” while contemplating how her choices might let her family down. The trailer for the upcoming remake shows that this song will play while Mulan is in the middle of a training before the war.

Mulan Herself

Unlike in the original film, where Mulan didn’t know how to hold a sword before she headed off with the army, in the remake, she’s a far more accomplished warrior who is very comfortable holding weapons of war.

“I’ll Make A Man Out Of You”

One of the most iconic scenes in the animated film was the army training sequence, where Mulan’s love interest sang “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You.” This scene will no longer be present in the remake, although the trailer shows that the instrumental version of the song will be played while Mulan and the other warriors are training for war.

Shan Yu

Shan Yu, the major villain with whom Mulan had a one-on-one rooftop combat toward the end of the original film, won’t be present in the remake. The trailer reveals that in the rooftop battle, Mulan is going to combat with a falcon instead.
