A 19-year-old newlywed woman was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by her husband’s cousin and his friend.

According to the police, the victim’s body was found at Ghorwadeshwar Hills in Maharashtra, India on Monday, Sept.20, however, the incident is believed to have happened on Sunday.

Investigators confirmed that a 25-year-old man, the victim’s brother-in-law, has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering the teen wife.

Police said the accused had earlier invited his newlywed cousin and his wife to a place at Thomas Colony in the Dehu Road area.

According to police, the woman and the main accused had gone to visit the ancient cave temple on Ghorwadeshwar Hills on Sunday.

There, the accused and his 24-year-old friend, identified as Akshay Karande, allegedly demanded sexual favors from her there.

"When she refused, the duo allegedly raped and killed her by strangling her with a scarf. Once dead, they smashed her face with a stone to conceal her identity. The body was thrown behind the bushes on the hills," said Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissioner Krishna Prakash, the Indian Express reported.

When she did not return, the teen victim’s husband set out searching for her but not to avail. He then alerted the police and filed a missing person report.

Based on the complaint, the police initiated an investigation and issued a search operation for the woman.

Shortly after, the teen wife’s disfigured body was found abandoned behind the bushes on the hills.

The body was recovered and sent to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. The results were being awaited.

Investigators located the main suspect and arrested him without incident. A manhunt has been issued to nab the suspect’s friend.

This is an ongoing investigation and no further details including the identities of the victim and her husband were revealed by the authorities.

In another similar incident, a 25-year-old Indian woman who was allegedly raped by her uncle, a police officer, several times over the past two years tried to end her life by jumping into the river Ganga, police said on Monday, Sept. 13.

The woman, a resident of the Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh, had jumped into the river on Sunday evening but was rescued by divers and police personnel who were present in the area.

A case has been registered on the basis of the woman's complaint.

In the complaint, the victim alleged that her uncle, a traffic police constable, took her to a hotel room where he gave her a cold drink spiked with sedatives.

When she fell unconscious, the accused raped her and shot a video of the assault on his cellphone, the victim alleged.

The woman further claimed that her uncle used the video to blackmail her and rape her several times over the past two years.

According to the authorities, the accused and his son abducted the woman on Sunday and took her to a hotel room in the Chakeri area in Kanpur where they shot another video of her to further blackmail her.

After escaping from their clutches, the woman made a call to the police helpline number and jumped into the river.

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused police officer and his son.

No arrests have been recorded yet.
