We’re already two episodes into the new season of “Nuestra Belleza Latina,” but the real competition is set to begin next Sunday, March 2, when the final 12 girls begin to compete to win the coveted crown and become the next Latina beauty queen. We saw changes this season, such as new hosts Chiquinquirá Delgado, Alejandra Espinoza and Pedro Moreno, and Jomari Goyso was warming up the third judge’s chair helping Osmel Sousa and Lupita Jones narrow down the girls while the mysterious third judge is revealed next week.

We see girls come and go every season, and we were left wondering what it takes to be a Nuestra Belleza Latina. Thankfully, our friends at Univision made our search for answers very easy when they graciously let us ask new co-hosts Chiquinquirá Delgado -- who as a former beauty queen herself sure knows the struggle to become a successful brand and entrepreneur – Pedro Moreno, who comes in with a fresh look into this business and Jomari Goyso, famed stylist who was present during the pre-casting and helped select the 12 finalists, and who has some input on what the judges specifically are looking for.

Having Chiqui, Alejandra and Pedro as co-hosts brings a new freshness to the show. Alejandra has already been in the girls’ position as she was the first “Nuestra Belleza Latina” and Chiqui didn’t have the help of a show and became who she is by working really hard. We asked her why she accepted to co-host this show (not that we’re complaining because we love seeing her gorgeous face on TV) and she said that many factors contributed to it. “This is one of Univision’s major projects and it’s a show that entertains the whole family,” said Delgado.

“I was motivated to accept this job because this show is full of stories of all the girls who participate, and this show changes their lives. They’re following their dreams. I also love that the whole production team is incredible. I’ve already worked with them in the past, and they make me feel so comfortable. I’m a former beauty queen and that’s how my career began, and that’s another thing that motivated my decision to host.”

Pedro, on his side, is very happy to have also landed this job next to two beauties. “I’m very happy to be working with Chiquinquirá Delgado and Alejandra Espinoza, not only because they’re gorgeous, but because they’re talented and because of how well they can carry the show. So far the chemistry between the three of us has been excellent and I don’t think that’s going to change. They are very kind, very generous, they help me out because I have the least experience doing this out of the three of us, and they’re great.”

We asked him what he thinks a NBL beauty queen should be like. “I think to be a part of ‘Nuestra Belleza Latina’ contestants have to just be themselves,” Moreno added. “A lot of times people try to be ‘special’ without knowing they already are. You don’t need to ‘try’ to be special because you are special as it is. Every person has something to add, and as long as each one of the contestants is confident in herself, I think that will draw them closer to the people’s hearts. I’m not saying that you will win just because of that, but you’ll win a space in people’s hearts and I think that’s the real victory in a reality show.”

Chiquinquirá weighed in, “I always tell girls who want to be in this that it isn’t easy. A lot of discipline and hard work comes with this. I don’t want them to think that what they see on TV, or holding a microphone, or appearing in a telenovela and all those things they want to accomplish, are done from one day to another. It’s the product of a lot of hard work. My advice to them is to learn as much as they can and interiorize the comments they get. Do not compare yourselves, because there’s always that female rivalry. Be yourselves above all, don’t try to imitate no one as each one of them has their own charm and talent, and try to cultivate relationships, because what you do here and now can have repercussions in their future.”

For his part, Jomari explains what goes on in the selection process. “I was chosen as the third judge for the first two episodes because in some way I know the girls. Lupita and Osmel don’t go to the castings, and they don’t know the girls. They have a very ‘cold’ vision of the beauty of the girls. When you don’t know someone and that person stands in front of you, you’re criticizing only how they look, their physical beauty, and for me that is the most absurd concept.”

“That doesn’t mean you’re beautiful, that only means you’re physically attractive. What matters to me personally is if the girl has style, how they treat people, how they make you feel when you talk to them, how they stand up for themselves when someone criticizes them, how they react… for me a woman is beautiful when they think they’re beautiful. I find that admirable. I try not to criticize -- and I think ‘Nuestra Belleza Latina’ has no issues with that either—the physical part, the body. My personal issue is when they don’t have a personality.”

He finished by saying what he wishes the new NBL to be. “My goal this season for the show, is that the winner that is selected knows how to fight for the Latino community. That she’s aware of the problems that we have, and her voice becomes a channel of change, and that he brings Latina women to a whole other level.”
