The National League runner-ups made an all-in move last season to compete for a World Series and the trend seems to be continuing. According NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty, the Padres made a late offer to outfielder Aaron Judge before he re-signed with the Yankees. It was also reported that San Diego missed out on shortstop Trea Turner who agreed to a deal to go the Phillies. In both instances, the club offered more money to each player than what they signed for.

San Diego was prepared to make Turner the highest paid shortstop in the league with an 11-year, $342 million contract. For Judge, the Padres were willing spend $400 million to lure the slugger away from New York and San Francisco.

Although they’ve whiffed on Judge and Turner, the Padres are still looking to make a splash. According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, San Diego has interest in shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Going after another shortstop is a bit curious for the Padres considering Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado are on long term deals. If Bogaerts does agree to go to Southern California, position changes may need to be made.
