Prince Charles struggled a lot after Princess Diana’s accident, even though they were no longer married at that time. Ironically, it was Princess Diana’s rival, Camilla, who comforted the Prince of Wales during this difficult time.

While speaking with Daily Mail, royal expert Penny Junor said that Prince Charles was just in the room next to Queen Elizabeth when he learned that his ex-wife got into an accident in Paris. But instead of seeking comfort from his own mother, Prince Charles opted to call Camilla on the phone.

“Never was the relationship between the prince and his mother thrown more starkly into relief than it was on that terrible night,” Junor said. “There they were, just feet away in their separate rooms, divided by paper-thin walls, but they didn’t go to one another either for comfort or to discuss logistics. The comforting was left to Camilla — 500 miles away at her home, Ray Mill, near Chippenham, Wiltshire — and other friends Charles called through what remained of the night,” Junor added.

Prince Charles initially thought that Princess Diana was still alive in the hospital. But after he found out that this wasn’t the case, he thought about using the Queen’s airplane so that he could reach Princess Diana as quickly as possible. However, this meant that he would also have to ask his mom’s permission and tell her what had happened.

Shortly after, the entire world learned that Princess Diana had tragically passed away. Prince Charles was on the phone with Camilla, and the latter gave him comforting words. The dad of two’s biggest worry is that Princess Diana’s death would be blamed on him and their divorce.

“Charles knew immediately what the public reaction would be: they would blame him,” Junor shared. “The world would go mad, he thought, and the monarchy could end up being destroyed. He said as much to his deputy private secretary Mark Bolland. And Bolland knew – just as Camilla knew – that his fears were justified.”

Prince Charles also worried about telling Prince William and Prince Harry that their mom passed away. But as per the Queen’s advice, the future king told his sons the news after they woke up in the morning.
