Republican lawmakers are escalating their criticism of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene over her combative stance regarding the party's strategy during the government shutdown.
Greene has repeatedly blasted her party, especially during the ongoing government shutdown. Earlier this month she claimed Republicans don't have plans for health care and should be working on addressing the issue: "When it comes to the point where families are spending anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000 a month and looking at hikes coming on their insurance premiums, I think that's unforgivable," she said.
Politico detailed in a report that Republicans believe her dissent could fracture the party's efforts to pressure Democrats into accepting their demands to fund the government.
Several high-profile lawmakers have criticized Greene publicly. On Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz said her stance is part of a larger trend.
"What I've found is that whenever an elected official decides that they are going to turn on Israel and hate Israel, you will very quickly see every other policy out of their mouth become very very liberal. And so suddenly Marjorie is for massive government spending and taxes, open borders and amnesty. Ok fine, that's not where the American people are. Where they are is very simple: we are on day 29 of the stupidest shutdown" Cruz said in an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box.
Elsewhere, House Speaker Mike Johnson said there are negotiations about health care through other channels. "Bless her heart, that's an absurd statement," he told CNN last week after Greene said Republicans are "sitting on the sidelines" on the matter.
Sen. Bernie Moreno, on his end, called on Greene to stop attacking the party and put forward a health care plan of her own. "She's certainly able to write a bill herself. Like if this is something she's passionate about, put pen to paper, write a bill. Present an option. Don't just criticize what other people are doing," he said.
