For those who have been following the Archie-inspired “Riverdale,” the wait is almost over. In two weeks, “Riverdale” season 5 unfurls although the first three episodes are carryovers.

Most will recall that “Riverdale” ended its fourth season abruptly no thanks to the coronavirus. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa initially felt that the shortened season would be trouble but eventually realized that “Chapter Seventy-Six: Killing Mr. Honey” (episode 19) turned out to be a good and perfect ending for the show.

“When I saw the cut of 19, what's great about it is all of the kids are in one big story together united against Mr Honey. And it does end on a pretty shocking, disturbing cliffhanger. So, it sort of was like, "Oh wait a minute, this could be a great season finale" and then prom would be a great season premiere next year. So it worked out in kind of the best way possible given everything,” Aguirre-Sacasa said in an interview with EW.com.

Hence, “Riverdale” season 5 will open with “Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax.” As originally planned, episode 20 will center on big events like prom and graduation. And it appears there is a new twist in the mix once the 5th season opens on Jan. 20.

Thanks to some new photos released by CW, it was revealed that a character from the canceled “Katy Keene” will be making an appearance on “Riverdale” season 5. This will be no other than K.O. Kelly (Zane Holtz) who will be among the characters viewers will see during the Riverdale High prom.

Aside from that, K.O. was spotted fighting Archie (KJ Apa) which hints that his character will have some bearing in the new season of “Riverdale.”

Worth also noting is that the first few episodes of “Riverdale” season 5 will be set five years before. A backstory on K.O. could be included in that which most may figure out once scenes shift to the actual setting.

These and more await fans of “Riverdale” which returns on Jan. 20 on The CW.
