The royal family is finally taking action to protect its newest members, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, from online abuse. Kensington Palace recently released its social media community guidelines, which have been implemented on social media accounts run by the palace, The Royal Family and Clarence House.

“We ask that anyone engaging with our social media channels shows courtesy, kindness and respect for all other members of our social media communities,” the new policy states.

The guidelines prohibit any social media posts that are offensive, threatening, hateful, abusive and obscene, as well contain spam. Posts that promote discrimination, whether based on religion, sex, disability, nationality or sexual orientation, are likewise prohibited. The new rules also warned against posting off-topic comments or irrelevant content, as well as those that promote or advertise any type of service.

“We reserve the right to determine, at our discretion, whether contributions to our social media channels breach our guidelines,” the new rules stated. “We reserve the right to hide or delete comments made on our channels, as well as block users who do not follow these guidelines.”

Everyone is encouraged to exercise prudence when making a comment or post to any of the royal family’s social media accounts. Otherwise, the palace warned that they “reserve the right to send any comments we deem appropriate to law enforcement authorities for investigation.”

The royal family is now starting to harness the power of social media to manage its branding and easily reach its ever-increasing fan base. At the moment, there are 3.9 million followers to its Twitter account, while Clarence House has 813,000 followers and Kensington Palace has 1.7 million followers. Meanwhile, there are already 4.5 million followers of the royal family’s Instagram account.

Of course, this ability to instantly reach a global audience is not without its disadvantages. Due to the anonymity of online posts, trolls have been running rampant in recent years by posting abusive comments and content on the royal family’s social media accounts. Among the royal family members, Meghan and Catherine are frequent targets of abusive comments.
